Southern Lights, a four-piece band, hailing from the Cape Winelands in South Africa. Although forming as a cohesive music group of four friends in 2003, it was not until 2015 that the name “Southern Lights”, was proposed and adopted. A cross pollination of acoustic pop-rock and folk, intertwined with authentic, organic African sounds and finished-off with Triveno’s distinctive vocals and falsetto, meant it was not easy to place the band into a specific genre. Their sound was therefore something quite unique.
Southern Lights consist of; Triveno Smith – lead vocals and acoustic guitar; Werner Carstens – electric guitar; Jandré Viljoen – bass guitar; Gavin Young – drums and percussion.
In 2016, the band released their debut single – ‘Looking for love’, crafted in the studio by award winning Producer Helmut Meijer. Receiving critical acclaim with the single from radio and all media, this helped secure their first TV appearance on Hectic Nine9 (SABC2) and paved the way for future single releases to secure play-listings on a variety of SA’s national and provincial radio stations such as GrootFM, RSG, TygerbergFM, Cape Pulpit Zone Radio, to name a few.
Since November 2016, Southern Lights has had the opportunity to be involved with the ‘Pebbles’ & ‘Heaven on Earth’ projects alongside Joshua na die Reën, having an annual show at L’Avenir Wine Estate as fund raiser for the respective projects. The band look forward to 2018 with more events and appearances scheduled.
